What Is Detoxification?



Detoxification is the process of removing or neutralizing toxins from the body.  Toxins can come from many sources.  Some can be caused by diet, medications or external environmental exposure.  In order to detoxify the body you need to make dietary and lifestyle changes. 

Foods
To begin with you should reduce the amount of toxins that you take into the body through food and drink.  Avoid chemical additives in food whenever possible.  Use fresh foods rather than processed.  When using processed foods opt for those with less ingredients and fewer chemical additives.  You should plan to support your detoxification process by paying close attention to eating the right foods. 

A detox cleansing diet should consist of fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grain foods such as rice, nuts and seeds, beans, extra virgin olive oil, salt, spices, herbal teas water and fruit juice.  These foods help to naturally cleanse the colon, improve circulation and clears toxins from the body more readily than other foods do. 

When eating a detox diet always drink plenty of water throughout the day.  Drink at least 8 glasses of 8 ounces each.  Avoid drinking liquids with a meal.  Dilute fruit juice with 50% water.  Avoid eating dairy products, sugar, wheat, caffeine, alcohol, chocolate and foods with high fat content.  Also avoid eating over-processed foods and those with high amounts of additives and preservatives.  These items tend to slow the digestive process and add mucous which can wreak havoc in the colon.

Fasting
Fasting is another method of detoxifying the body.  Fasting helps the body to rid itself of impurities and toxins and aids in the new cell development.  Fasting can help the digestive system to rest.  Typically fasting involves eliminating solid foods from the diet.  Liquids are digested more easily in the upper digestive tract so they allow the colon to rest. 

Colon Cleansing
Another method of detoxification is colon cleansing.  Colon cleansing involves cleaning out the intestines to rid them of built up toxins.  Colon cleansing can be done through a clinic or through an at-home cleansing kit.  Cleansing uses herbal substances and irrigation to remove toxins.  There are many home colon-cleansing kits available on the market.  Talk to a doctor before starting a colon-cleanse regime.  Colon cleansing may not be appropriate for those with certain medical conditions.
