Some people like to practice detoxification diets. These diets will in effect cleanse the colon as well. There are several modifications of these diets. Most involve abstinence of food and reliance on liquids usually water to flush out your system.. You should be very careful of these diets as they will produce rapid detoxification and sometimes this is hard for your body to handle.

Why do we need to cleanse the colon? Our diets are not as good as they used to be. We do not eat enough fiber and eat excess sugar and junk foods. This leads among other things to a sluggish digestive system and often constipation. When you get constipated fecal matter sits in your colon. They are also produced from the breakdown of foods; the water we drink and the air we breathe will also contribute to toxins in our body. Plus any infections we may have also produce toxins that can find their way to the digestive system.

How detoxification diets cleanse the colon: Detoxification diets are good for actually cleansing the impurities from your digestive system.  Detoxification diets speed up the process of getting rid of toxins from the body. As such your whole digestive system including your colon will be cleansed. This will cut down the risk of diseases, including cancer, which are caused by the build up of toxins.

The first thing you should do before starting a detoxification diet is to consult your doctor. Not everyone is able to handle these astringent cleansing methods. Once you have the go ahead from your doctor then your first step in cleansing your colon is to start eating a healthy diet. Eat natural foods, like whole grains and fiber rich foods. Decrease or even just eradicate refined foods from your diet. Replace junk food and sweet with fruits and vegetables. Try to regulate your fats and carbohydrates.

Once you have done this you will be able to start on your detoxification diet. This can be abstinence from all foods and just drinking water. This is the most astringent diet and will allow your body to eradicate toxins quite rapidly. Be careful of this method, as when toxins are eradicated quite quickly you might not feel well. Other variations of this are supplementing water for natural fruit juices, which can also aid in detoxification. Sometimes just certain foods are eliminated.
